Mutekiya Ramen in Ikebukuro

Standard

Probably the most popular ramen shop in Ikebukuro is Mutekiya. Open from Monday to Friday at 10:30AM to 4:00AM (Yes, 4:00AM), Mutekiya is located on the south side of Ikebukuro Station. I’ve been here twice and walked or biked passed on numerous occasions, and there was almost always a line. Of course, depending on when you go, the length of the line varies. If you don’t want to wait in line, I recommend not going during lunch and dinner hours. Since it opens til 4:00AM, I’d probably go for late-night ramen, because I mean, who usually eats ramen at that time?

Once in line, you’ll be handed a menu of the restaurant when you get near the entrance. Obviously, this is for efficiency reasons. As a foreigner who can’t read Japanese, this would give me an ample amount of time to look through the menu so that I can make up my mind on which ramen to get because they all just look so good! When you’re down to about ten minutes or so until you get in, a worker will take your order outside.

After getting seated, your food should arrive within a few minutes. There are several condiments in front of you to choose from, but what stood out to me was the peeled garlic that you can manually crush with a garlic press. Other than condiments, you can also choose to turn your glass of water into green tea. What I mean by that is that you can add a green tea flavoring liquid to your glass of water, thus turning it into green tea. Be careful not to add too much, unless you want a super bitter green tea.

The last time I went, I ordered the Honmaru and was not let down. It was definitely worth the wait, although mines wasn’t too long because I went at a non-busy time. If you’re ever in Ikebukuro and want some good ramen, definitely check out Mutekiya. However, if you’re in Ikebukuro, but don’t want to wait two hours for ramen, there are definitely a lot of other good ramen shops with shorter lines to choose from in Ikebukuro. I can think of several off the top of my head, which I’ll save for later posts. As always, the location of Mutekiya is below. See ya!
